| Resumo | The Fundão dam collapse, which occurred in November 2015 at Mariana - MG is identified as the biggest environmental tragedy registered in Brazil. The mining residues containing high concentrations of heavy metals and suspended materials arrived in Rio Doce, and after two weeks reached its mouth in the city of Regency - ES. The contact of this contaminated plume generated great concern with regard to the coastal ecosystems and to the extent of such an impact on living organisms. This study aims to identify and characterize the rivers plume in the coastal environment through the optical properties derived from the MODIS sensor on board Aqua satellite. Ocean color images from five years prior to the accident and from December 2015 and January 2016 were analyzed using the SEADAS 7.3.2 software in order to detect spatial and temporal optical signature of the contaminated plume. The level 1 images were processed into level 2 using the SWIR NIR atmospheric correction scheme, and the spectral backscattering and reflectance products were extracted. In order to track the plum spatially, we developed an algorithm that performs relatively well, being able to highlight Rio Doces waters from other rivers along the coast. We observed the constant presence of the Rio Doces plume over the years prior and after the dam collapse, with a strong spectral signature in the green and red bands, but we also observed an increase of both backscattering and reflectance in the red bands (645, 667 and 678 nm) after the accident. |
